On May 1, 1982, Nishi-ku was subdivided into the three smaller wards of Nishi-ku, Sawara-ku and Jōnan-ku.

This represents the ridge of Mount Abura (located in Jōnan-ku, Sawara-ku and Minami-ku, Fukuoka).
On March 23, 2010, Ueki, along with the town of Jōnan (from Shimomashiki District), was merged into the expanded city of Kumamoto and no longer exists as an independent municipality.
