Hartnell got his big break at Wildstorm Productions and eventually worked his way up to become writer and co-creator of the hit Danger Girl series with artist J. Scott Campbell.
At the WizardWorld 2006 Comic Convention held in Los Angeles, Marvel Comics announced that Campbell signed an exclusive contract with the company, and to work on a Spider-Man series with writer Jeph Loeb.

He soon gained a reputation in the American comics industry for his highly sexualized illustrations of women.

In August 2005, Campbell published Wildsiderz, which he co-created with his Danger Girl writing partner Andy Hartnell.
The covers were illustrated by J. Scott Campbell and Alex Garner (Danger Girl) and the interiors were illustrated by Dave Cabrera.
