Two years later, in November 1961, Illingworth was selected for Jack Potter's XI in an invitational one-day single innings match against Bill Lawry's XI at Junction Oval.
In December 1963 he scored 123* for a Combined XI against the touring South Africans, it earned him a place in the 12 man squad for the second Test however Tom Veivers was selected ahead of him.
He hit his first century, 126, against Western Australia, while he was still only 18, adding 107 for the fourth wicket with his captain, Jack Potter.
