In 1981, Burns made his acting debut in an episode of the BBC's Play For Today series entitled Iris in the Traffic, Ruby in the Rain, written by Belfast-born poet and playwright Stewart Parker, which also featured the rest of Stiff Little Fingers effectively playing themselves as 'The Band'.

As of 2013, Burns plays lead and rhythm guitar, and lead vocals, Ian McCallum plays guitar and does backing vocals, Ali McMordie plays bass guitar and Steve Grantley plays drums, and is also on backing vocals.
During the performance, a note was passed to the band's lead singer, Jake Burns, who then made an announcement that Gary McMichael was to phone his home.
