In early times Jalaun seems to have been the home of two Rajput clans, the Bhadaurias in the east and the Kachwahas in the west.

When the news of the rising at Kanpur reached Kalpi, the men of the 53rd Native Infantry deserted their officers, and in June the Jhansi rebels reached the district, and began their murder of Europeans.
On 14 February 1839 he was appointed adjutant to the HEIC's Jalaun Corps (which later became the Bundelkhand Legion), and served in disturbances in Bundelkhand (1840-1), Jigni, and Chirgaon, and became Acting Captain-Commandant of cavalry, Bundelkhand Legion, on 24 January 1842.

The state was bounded on the north by the district of Cawnpore in the western district of Jalaun and to the south and east by the district of Hamirpur (all of the United Provinces).
