In 1770 he married Lady Margaret Lindsay, second daughter of James Lindsay, 5th Earl of Balcarres.

Forbidden Cargoes is a 1925 British silent adventure film directed by Fred LeRoy Granville and starring Peggy Hyland, Clifford McLaglen and James Lindsay.
In 1890, he became a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, upon the proposal of Sir William Thomson, Robert Flint, Hugh Macmillan and James Lindsay.
He designed Haigh Hall in Haigh, Greater Manchester to replace the existing hall which dated back to Norman times and lived in a cottage in the grounds whilst it was constructed between 1830-1849.
