This work put him in contact with many botanists,for instance Joseph Pitton de Tournefort, Caspar Commelin, William Sherard, James Petiver, Johann Georg Volckamer, Felice Viali (1638–1722) and Giovanni Battista Triumfetti.
He named the White Admiral butterfly, and gave the name Fritillary to another group of butterflies after the Latin word for a chequered dice box.
The Marbled White was called "Our Half-mourner" by James Petiver, (1717), "The Marmoris" by Benjamin Wilkes and "The Marmoress" by Moses Harris.
