In February 1981 when Yoweri Museveni launched his guerrilla war against the government of President Milton Obote, Janet Museveni and her children re-located to Nairobi, Kenya, where they lived with family friends until 1983.

Janet Kainembabazi Kataaha Museveni was born in Bwongyera village in Kajara county, Ntungamo district, Uganda to Mr and Mrs Edward Kataaha.
Notable members on the Board of the Institute are Kim Dae-jung, past president of the Republic of Korea; Queen Rania Al-Abdullah, first lady of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan; and Janet Museveni, first lady of the Republic of Uganda.
As well, he is a special representative of the Task Force on AIDS of Ugandan First Lady Janet Museveni.
