It shares its name with the early Japanese gunboat Maya, and per Japanese naval naming conventions, is named after a mountain, specifically Mount Maya outside of Kobe.

On March 26, 1943, the Maya participated in the Battle of the Komandorski Islands, off Kamchatka Peninsula.

The entire task force consisted of the aircraft carrier Zuikaku, the light aircraft carriers Zuihō, Jun'yō and Ryūjō, the heavy cruisers Maya, Takao, Myōkō, Haguro and Nachi, the light cruisers Abukuma, Kiso and Tama, and 15 destroyers.
The cruisers Maya, Suzuya, Tenryu and destroyers Kazagumo, Makigumo, Michishio and Yugumo accompanied, while the Kirishima, Atago, Takao, Nagara and six destroyers formed a screening unit.
The day after the Battle of Empress Augusta Bay (2 November 1943), Noshiro departed Truk with CruDiv 4's Atago, Takao and Maya, CruDiv 7's Suzuya and Mogami, CruDiv 8's Chikuma and four destroyers, arriving at Rabaul on 5 November 1943.
During this time period she assisted in the rescue of the cruiser Maya survivors, later transferring them to the battleship Musashi, during which time she escorted the damaged Takao, back to Brunei.
After his promotion to captain in 1936, he was re-assigned to command the Sendai in 1938, followed by the Mogami, Jintsu, and Maya.
