5 unusual facts about Jasper National Park

Most of Mountjoy’s research has concentrated on Jasper Park's Miette area, and in particular on its exposed coral reefs from the Devonian period (395 million to 345 million years ago).

Hector Lake

Hector Lake is one of the lakes that line the Icefields Parkway in Banff National Park and Jasper National Park, other such lakes being Bow Lake, Lake Louise, Peyto Lake, Mistaya Lake, Waterfowl Lakes, Chephren Lake and Sunwapta Lake.

JasPer

The name "JasPer" has simultaneous connotations with Canada's Jasper National Park, with the semi-precious gemstone, jasper, and with "JP" as an abbreviation of the JPEG-2000 standard.

Jasper National Park

Major river systems originating in the park include the North Saskatchewan River (part of the Hudson Bay basin), and the Athabasca and Smoky rivers (part of the Arctic Ocean basin).

Other attractions are the Marmot Basin ski area; the Snocoach tours of the Athabasca Glacier, an outlet glacier of the Columbia Icefield; Athabasca Falls; the Jasper Tramway, and numerous other outdoor related recreational activities (such as hiking, fishing, wildlife viewing, rafting, kayaking and camping).

Large areas of natural habitat remain in Banff National Park, Jasper National Park, Kakwa Wildlands, Willmore Wilderness Park, Bugaboo Provincial Park and Ghost River Wilderness Area.

Hinton/Jasper-Hinton Airport

The airport is home to two small air charter operators conducting scenic tours of nearby Jasper National Park, Mount Robson and the Columbia Icefields as well as providing aerial services for mining, forestry and wildlife research.
