In January 2002 the inaugural performance in Hardymon Hall featured singer Madeline Eastman backed by pianist Frank Martin, bassist Peter Barshay and drummer Vince Lateano.

Jazz poet laureate Ishmael Reed enrolled in 1998 at the age of 60 to learn jazz piano.

By early 2007 she had put a new team together and released the concert recording, Live at the Jazzschool (Grr8Records), recorded in Berkeley at the Jazzschool.


Shirley Dean

Recognition for bringing the Arts and Theater District to life in Downtown Berkeley by establishing a public-private partnership with the Tony Award-winning Berkeley Repertory Theatre and bringing in the JazzSchool, Aurora Theater, and Nevo Center for the Performing Arts in one of Berkeley’s oldest buildings.
