In 2000, DeBartolo York and her husband gained control of the 49ers and other sporting assets from her brother, Edward J. DeBartolo Jr. She and her husband have since given over control of the 49ers to their son Jed York.
However, when the 49ers brought in Mike Nolan to be head coach, it was decided that would be the best time to also bring York into the organization and prepare a several year transition of leadership.

On December 28, 2008 John and Denise York announced that their son, Jed York, would become the Team President and Owner and that they would become co-chairmen responsible for providing resources and maintaining their role of interacting with other owners and NFL executives.
