The team was established with a close help from its NBA affiliate Utah Jazz, who indicated to the general manager job David Fredman - who was an assistant coach and director of scouting for the Jazz for 28 years, and also the assistant general manager for the Denver Nuggets - and as a coach Brad Jones, a regional scout who was the nephew of long time Jazz coach Jerry Sloan.
He played college basketball under Evansville coach Arad McCutchan even as he worked part-time making refrigerators for Whirlpool.

After the retirement of long-time Jazz anchors Malone and Stockton, Sloan coached a younger group of budding stars, including Carlos Boozer, Andrei Kirilenko and later, Deron Williams.
In college he was a first-team All-American in basketball and led the Purple Knights to the Final Four of the 1965 NCAA Men's Division II Basketball Tournament, where they were defeated 93-70 by the University of Evansville, who had Jerry Sloan and Larry Humes, both All-Americans.
