Construction of the station was to begin by April 2009 but started in June 2009, and the station opened on 13 December 2009 by Amsterdam mayor Job Cohen.
Mayor Job Cohen had preferred no change but complied reluctantly.
In 2006 the World Mayor organization determined Cohen to be runner-up in the award for World Mayor of 2006, behind Melbourne mayor John So, and ahead of Harrisburg mayor Stephen R. Reed.
In 2005 he was given the Cosmic Award (by Job Cohen) at the annual Hollandse Nieuwe theater festival in Amsterdam; the award is given to the best Dutch artist of non-Dutch descent.
When they got back they received the prestigious 'Amsterdam Award of Art', the most important award of the city, presented by the Amsterdam mayor, Job Cohen.
She officially retired from making television in 2006, and on the occasion of her last Sonja show, was awarded as Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau by Job Cohen, then-mayor of Amsterdam.
