The feature is named after the Flemish cartographer Jodocus Hondius (Joost de Hondt, 1563-1612) whose 1595 map depicted the southern continent Terra Australis separated from both Tierra del Fuego and New Guinea.
They were published on Plancius' celestial globe of late 1597, which was published by Jodocus Hondius.

He was born in Amsterdam, the son of the famous cartographer Jodocus Hondius who had started a map-making business in the city.
In 1612 he married Elisabeth de Hondt, the daughter of Jodocus Hondius.
