The grocery chain was founded by Joe Albertson in 1939 in Boise, and the company was headquartered in the city until 2006, when it was acquired by Supervalu of Eden Prairie, Minnesota.
1938 Joe Albertson, a district manager for Safeway, enters into partnership with L.S. Skaggs and the latter’s accountant, Tom Cuthbert, and opens first store in Boise, Idaho.

She attended school in the Boise school system and after graduation she enrolled at the College of Idaho, Caldwell, where, in chemistry class, she met Joe Albertson.
