In 1997, two weeks after the final Another Umbrella show, Derrick began performing with drummer Bob Lee and a core of revolving musicians (including Nels Cline and Joe Baiza) under the name Solo Career, a side-project which lasted until 2002, performing whenever the musicians' schedules allowed.
The Unknown Instructors are an all-star improvisational rock outfit that features the former rhythm section of The Minutemen and Firehose, bassist Mike Watt and drummer George Hurley; Saccharine Trust members, guitarist Joe Baiza and vocalist Jack Brewer; and vocalist/saxophonist Dan McGuire.

A supergroup of SST alumni that mixed jazz and hard rock mainly as an instrumental vehicle, the band included Chuck Dukowski (SWA, ex-Black Flag) on bass and vocals, Greg Ginn (Black Flag) on guitar, Greg Cameron (SWA) on drums, Joe Baiza (Saccharine Trust) on guitar, and Tom Troccoli (Tom Troccoli's Dog and Black Flag roadie) on blues harp and vocals.
