In Philadelphia in 1799 Ricketts' Circus performed "The Death of Miss McCrea", a pantomime co-written by John Durang.
He was a part of a group called Ricketts's Circus, which traveled throughout the northeastern United States and into Canada.
The city's Guardians of the Poor moved victims into Ricketts' Circus, an open-air arena on 12th Street, then far from the infected areas of the city.
