Vivian McGrath defeated John Bromwich 6–3, 1–6, 6–0, 2–6, 6–1 in the final to win the Men's Singles tennis title at the 1937 Australian Championships.
In 1946, 1947 and 1949 she reached the finals of the Australian Championships in mixed doubles with partner, John Bromwich and again in 1950 with Eric Sturgess, losing all four times.
Another example is John Bromwich, the best Australian player, who was prevented by Norman Brookes, president of the Australian Lawn Tennis Association, from playing Wimbledon three consecutive years (1938, 1939, 1946) because Brookes' priority was to win the Davis Cup.
