In the late 1880s, cycling was becoming a popular form of transportation and hobby due in large part to John Dunlop's 1888 patent for the inflatable bicycle tyre.
Prominent racehorse owner, Sheikh Mohammed, had his first winner at Brighton racecourse on 20 June 1977 when his filly Hatta, trained by John Dunlop, won the £968 Bevendene Maiden Stakes.
In the years before John Dunlop invented the pneumatic tire, Rudge addressed the rough ride by producing a four-bladed, spring-suspended fork in 1887.
In England he currently has approximately 200 horses in training spread over a number of trainers including Michael Stoute, John Dunlop, John Gosden, William Haggas, Marcus Tregoning, Ed Dunlop and Mark Johnston.
Another edition (1888) was edited by Henry Wilson; and there was a German translation as John Dunlop's Geschichte der Prosadichtungen (1851), by Felix Liebrecht.
