The scent is not to everyone's liking: the herbalist John Gerard found it "evill and lothsome" and at Hampton Court Palace Queen Anne had box hedging grubbed up because the odor was offensive, Daniel Defoe tells.
In May 1654 Fox, Peter Vowell, and John Gerard were arrested for plotting to overwhelm Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell's bodyguard, with a party of 30 mounted men, and to assassinate him as he travelled to Hampton Court.
He was first married to author Geraldine Lux Flanagan, with whom he had two children, Cara Louise Flanagan and John Gerard Flanagan; then to author Ellen Raskin, and subsequently to editor Barbara Williams Flanagan.
