In November of that year Colonel Bishop imprisoned John Howard Payne for 13 days on the grounds of the house.
Best known for her performances of the music of George Frideric Handel, Vincenzo Bellini, and Gaetano Donizetti, she also performed sentimental American songs such as Henry Bishop's 1852 setting of John Howard Payne's "Home! Sweet Home!" and Stephen Foster's "Old Folks at Home".
She is currently the John Howard Payne Professor of Music at Union College in Schenectady, New York, where she has been since 1980, teaching courses on music theory and composition, in addition to founding the Union College Orchestra.

He edited for the Boston Bibliophile Society five volumes of Thoreau's manuscripts, a volume of the Shelley-Payne correspondence, and one of the Fragments and Letters of T. L. Peacock.
