Irish historian Joseph Lee in his book The Modernisation of Irish Society evaluated the CDB in the following words: "The Board's promise, in short, generally far exceeded its promise" (p. 129).
In 1993, he was elected to the 20th Seanad Éireann as an independent member for the National University of Ireland constituency.
However the Irish historian J. J. Lee wrote: "Redmond could have tactically done nothing other than support the British war campaign; . . . nobody committed to Irish unity could have behaved other than Redmond did at the time. Otherwise, there would be no chance whatever of a united Ireland, in which Redmond passionately believed".
