Scottish major general in Swedish service John Leslie was appointed governor of the town and gave orders to have its defenses strengthened and the thousands of bodies buried.
He married Mary, née Lloyd (d. 1785), widow of John Leslie, 10th Earl of Rothes, in 1770 and they had four sons and five daughters.
Along with John Campbell, 1st Earl of Loudoun and John Leslie, 6th Earl of Rothes he revised the additions to the covenant in February 1638.
