Neil Sheehan wrote a Pulitzer Prize-winning Vietnam history and biography of Vann, A Bright Shining Lie: John Paul Vann and America in Vietnam, in which Sheehan examines Vann's alleged career-stunting incident involving a morals charge during his service in West Germany and how this possibly affected Vann's future actions and resulting career path in Vietnam.

Vann accepted a job in Denver, Colorado with defense contractor Martin Marietta and succeeded there in a term of nearly two years, but missed Vietnam and angled to return.
From his headquarters at Pleiku, he and his senior U.S. advisor, John Paul Vann, commanded ARVN forces during the North Vietnamese Easter Offensive of 1972.

Sheehan eventually completed the book, A Bright Shining Lie: John Paul Vann and America in Vietnam (1988, published by Random House and edited by Robert Loomis).
