In a procedure first attempted at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, researchers at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford have used gene therapy to attempt to curtail the condition which is caused by a faulty gene labelled REP1 and causes the light sensitive cells in the eye to gradually die.
The ECM test is believed to be offered on a handful of UK NHS hospitals, including the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, John Radcliffe Hospital, Princess Elizabeth (Guernsey) and Royal Free Hospital.
Houghton was implanted with a Jarvik 2000 heart pump at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, England, by professor Stephen Westaby, on 20 June 2000 owing to severe heart failure.
