He was born Edward Michael Pakenham, son of Admiral Sir Thomas Pakenham by his wife Louisa, daughter of John Staples and niece of Thomas Conolly of Castletown.
The long-serving MP John Staples was grandson of the fourth Baronet, brother-in-law of the seventh Baronet, father of the ninth Baronet and grandfather of the tenth Baronet.
