Lodewijk Cornelis Josephus Andreas van Meeuwen and scion of the catholic noble family Van Meeuwen (titled as a jonkheer), studied law at the university of Leiden and was a lawyer in 's-Hertogenbosch.
In 1934, immediately after her divorce from her first husband, Jonkheer Marc Edouard Marie de Becker-Rémy, a Belgian aristocrat, she married her lover, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, a member of the prominent Rothschild family and the owner of one of France's most famous vineyards, Château Mouton Rothschild in Pauillac in the Médoc.
His father was jhr. mr. Abraham van Karnebeek (1836-1925), a conservative liberal politician, who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs (1885-1888).
