In the early 1940s Halpern worked with Lord Stabolgi to achieve the objectives of Bergson's Committee for a Jewish Army, a campaign which was endorsed enthusiastically by the Jewish Chronicle, but which antagonised the Zionist establishment because of its association with Jabotinsky's New Zionist Organization.
On 2 March 1925, questions were asked in Parliament by Joseph Kenworthy, MP about the profitability and proposed sale of the ships to Greece, and what arrangements had been made for the continued employment of her British crew.

The seat had been held since 1919 by Lieutenant-Commander Hon. Joseph Kenworthy, who had first been elected as a Liberal Party and had been comfortably returned in 1926 when he sought re-election after joining the Labour Party.
When he died in 1953, he was succeeded by David Montague de Burgh Kenworthy, 11th Baron Strabolgi, another left-wing politician and member of the Labour Party.
