MacRory taught Scripture and Modern Theology at St Mary's College, Oscott in England until 1889, when he was appointed Professor of Scripture and Oriental Languages at his alma mater of Maynooth College.
Archbishop Michael Kelly was appointed Visitor of the College and, in due course, the newly elected Council of eighteen members appointed Reverend Mother Margaret MacRory (sister of Joseph MacRory) as the first Principal.
