A real effort to improve the performance of the engine in 1938 resulted in the Hispano-Suiza 12Y-45, which used the S-39-H3 supercharger co-designed by André Planiol and Polish engineer Joseph Szydlowski.
Joseph Szydlowski (Józef Szydłowski) (November 21, 1896, Skryhiczyn (in Chełm County, Poland), – July 16, 1988 in Israel), was a Jewish-Polish-French-Israeli aircraft engine designer who founded Turbomeca in France.
The first true turboshaft engine for helicopters was built by the French engine firm Turbomeca, led by the founder, Joseph Szydlowski.
