unusual facts about Joule–Thomson effect

HMAS Mary Cam

She was launched in 1918 by Ritchie, Graham & Milne, Whiteinch at Glasgow as Joule.

Joule effect

Joule's first law (Joule heating), a physical law expressing the relationship between the heat generated and current flowing through a conductor.

The Joule–Thomson effect (during Joule expansion), the temperature change of a gas (usually cooling) when it is allowed to expand freely.

Joule Unlimited

Joule Unlimited was founded within Flagship VentureLabs by Noubar Afeyan and David Berry (inventor).

In addition to its founders, Joule's Board of Directors includes Graham Allison, Anatoly Chubais, Stelios Papadopoulos, Caroline Dorsa, Ruben Vardanian, John Podesta, and CEO, Bill Sims.

Mechanical equivalent of heat

In particular Joule had experimented on the amount of mechanical work generated by friction needed to raise the temperature of a pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit and found a consistent value of 772.24 foot pound force (4.1550 J·cal-1).

Though Tyndall again pressed von Mayer's cause in Heat: A Mode of Motion (1863) with the publication of Sir Henry Enfield Roscoe's Edinburgh Review article Thermo-Dynamics in January 1864, Joule's reputation was sealed while that of von Mayer entered a period of obscurity.

Uncle Rotter

The band were spotted by legendary Rock DJ Krusher Joule when they shared the stage with him at a gig in Shepherd's Bush, London, in March 2008.

Voltage spike

While generally referred to as a voltage spike, the phenomenon in question is actually an energy spike, in that it is measured not in volts but in joules; a transient response defined by a mathematical product of voltage, current, and time.
