January 5 - Journal des sçavans begins publication in France, the first scientific journal.
The history of scientific journals dates from 1665, when the French Journal des sçavans and the English Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society first began systematically publishing research results.

Journals edited by Bon Joseph Dacier included the Journal des sçavans, and he also wrote on the history of the Order of Saint Lazarus (of which he was a member).
Basnage defended himself in the Journal des sçavans, but the Jesuits went ahead with an expurgated edition, a model for the Dictionnaire de Trévoux.
