Less than a year later, upon closure of the College, the Quarterly commenced independent publication, with Bernhard E. Fernow as editor-in-chief and a board of editors consisting of many prominent figures in American forestry in the early part of the 20th century, including Carl Schenck, founder of the Biltmore Forest School.
The Journal of Forestry and Forest Science are the most comprehensive journals of general scholarly forestry research.

According to a 2006 study of the research impact of North American forestry programs published in the Journal of Forestry, the College of Natural Resources and Environment’s forestry program was second on the perceptions-based composite score and third on the citations-based and publications-based index.
