Recently, most entries have been culled from listeners of the Charlotte, NC-based radio program The Big Show with John Boy and Billy. In recent years, members of the Tom Joyner Radio Show's predominantly African-American audience have appeared in BC commercials after hearing of the promotion on that program, or from promotions held on Joyner's annual "Fantastic Voyage" fantasy cruise.
It is currently directed by Professor Joyner, and Professor Catherine Lotrionte serves as the Associate Director of the Institute.
During the October 12, 2010, episode of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, in an interview with Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA), Stewart credited Joyner with the joke: "Sort of in the way that murderers get sometimes, like, 'I found Jesus and I'm OK now.' 'Well, when did you find Jesus?' 'Right after you found me.'"

Southwest Airlines is a prominent sponsor of the radio show, especially Joyner's on-site remotes (called "Sky Shows"), and offers free round-trip airfare to any destination that Southwest flies as a recurring giveaway on the show.

In October 2009 WQNC changed to a more contemporary sound, dropping the talk show hosts other than Joyner and adding energetic music from such artists as Usher, Patti LaBelle and Whitney Houston.
