While vacationing in Florida, he drinks from a spring which turns out to be the legendary Fountain of Youth sought by Juan Ponce de León.
The town was founded by European Americans in 1793 on the anniversary of the discovery of Florida by Juan Ponce de León.
A health resort (named for the explorer Juan Ponce de León) was located here, and the community was named for the resort.

Agüeybaná, the older, received Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León upon Ponce de León's arrival to Puerto Rico in 1508.
Ponce de Leon was said to have named the island for Maria Anna von der Pfalz-Neuburg, the queen of Charles II of Spain, the sponsor of his expedition.
