Somers and Sir Thomas Gates oversaw the construction of two small ships, the Deliverance and the Patience. They were built from local timber (Bermuda Cedar) and the salvaged spars and rigging of the wrecked Sea Venture.
Other species introduced in an attempt to replace the juniper forest included the Bay Grape (Coccoloba uvifera).

Examples of these homes include the Mayflower House, Camden House, Tucker House, and Verdmont House, the latter of which, according to the Bermuda National Trust, contains the colony's finest collection of antique Bermuda cedar furnishings.
The company is named after the Juniperus bermudiana, cedar trees found only in Bermuda that are extremely hardy in the face of hurricanes and other adverse conditions.
