3 unusual facts about Köppen

El Tiemblo

El Tiemblo has a Mediterranean climate (temperate with hot dry summers) according to the Köppen classification.

Saguenay, Quebec

Under the Köppen classification system, Saguenay has a borderline humid continental climate verging on a subarctic climate.

Sahel

Since the threshold values of semi-aridity here (100–200 to 600 mm) are clearly lower than in the Köppen climate classification (390 to 780 mm for stations with mean annual temperature of 25°C and dry season centered in "winter", and even 440 to 880 mm at 30°C), the tropical semi-arid Sahelian climate, incidentally the hottest climate on Earth, is on the borderline of Köppen's hot semi-arid climates (BSh) and Köppen's hot arid climates (BWh).

Aldan, Russia

Aldan has the typical eastern Siberian subarctic climate (Köppen Dfc) though it is affected by the Pacific Ocean more than localities in the lower Lena basin, which gives it much heavier rainfall during the summer than most of the republic, as well as a little more snowfall and considerably less extreme winter temperatures.

Anyang

The city actually lies on the border between steppe and the North China Plain, and as such, it has a four-season, monsoon-influenced climate, classified as a semi-arid climate (Köppen BSk).

Esquel

Owing to its location on the immediate leeward side of the Andes, Esquel has a Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csb), though it is much more continental than the more classic Mediterranean zones of central Chile, and frosts and even snow are common in the winter months from April to September.

Kaiyuan, Liaoning

Kaiyuan has a monsoon-influenced humid continental climate (Köppen Dwa), characterised by hot, humid summers and long, cold and windy, but dry winters.

Khatgal, Khövsgöl

Khatgal experiences a subarctic climate (Köppen Dwc) with very long, very dry, frigid winters and short, mild, relatively wet summers.

Ko Samui

Ko Samui features a tropical monsoon climate under Köppen’s climate classification.

Nevelsk

Nevelsk has a humid continental climate (Köppen Dfb) with cold winters, warm summers and generally heavy precipitation from the Aleutian Low, whose winds hit the town direct from the Sea of Japan.

Quzhou

Quzhou has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cfa) with four distinctive seasons, characterised by hot, humid summers and chilly, cloudy and drier winters (with occasional snow).

Rosetta

Köppen-Geiger climate classification system classifies its climate as hot desrt (BWh), but blowing winds from the Mediterranean Sea greatly moderate the temperatures, typical to the Egypt's north coast, making its summers moderately hot and humid while its winters mild and moderately wet when sleet and hail are also common.

Shangluo

As with the other two anchoring cities of Shannan, Shangluo has a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cwa), with cool winters, hot, humid summers, and ample precipitation by provincial standards.

Shanwei

Shanwei has a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cwa), with short, mild to warm winters, and long, hot, humid summers.

Shaowu

Shaowu has a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cfa), with short, mild winters and very hot, humid summers.

Tongliao

Tongliao has a four-season, monsoon-influenced, continental steppe climate (Köppen BSk), with long, cold, windy, but dry winters, and hot, humid summers.

Weifang

Weifang has a monsoon-influenced, four-season climate, on the very borderline between humid continental and humid subtropical (Köppen Dwa/Cwa, respectively), with hot, humid summers, and cold but dry winters.

Wladimir Köppen

Köppen's grandfather belonged to the cohort of German physicians that were invited to Russia by empress Catherine II to improve sanitation in the provinces, and later became a personal physician to the tsar.

Xiangyang

Xiangyang has a monsoon-influenced, four season humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cfa), with cold, damp (but comparatively dry), winters, and hot, humid summers.

Yan'an

Yan'an has a humid continental climate (Köppen climate classification Dwa) that borders on a steppe climate (Köppen BSk), with cold, dry, and moderately long winters, and hot, somewhat humid summers.

Zaoyang

Zaoyang has a monsoon-influenced, four season humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cwa), with cold, damp (but comparatively dry), winters, and hot, humid summers.
