In concert with some of his colleagues at Kent State he also co-founded the Portage County Family Planning, Counseling and Mental Health Center in Ravenna, Ohio with Dr. Dwight I. Arnold, a KSU Emeritus professor, and Dr. John Guidabaldi (Chairman, Associate Professor, Early Childhood Ed.), in 1962.

Mary McLeod Bethune, founding member of the National Council of Negro Women and who had given the convocation speech at Clarke’s graduation from KSU, was instrumental in forming and recruiting for the All-Volunteer Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC).
He was drafted in the 1953 NFL Draft in the 26th round by the Cleveland Browns as the 311th overall pick, but he did not play professional sports because of a career ending serious knee injury he suffered in the 1953 KU versus KSU football game.
