On the Kahala side is a larger stone gatehouse with rounded edges of the kind popular in the 1930s.
As soon as the former lessees acquired fee simple titles to their homes, those became attractive to Japanese investors and speculators who paid outlandish prices for those homes (largely located in the upscale Kahala and Hawaii Kai neighborhoods), causing a ripple effect throughout the island.
Now a mix of residential area with a small business district (mainly restaurants and service industries), it is located in the urbanized Honolulu region near Kahala and Diamond Head.

Samuel Morgan Slom, known as Sam Slom (born April 13, 1942), is a Republican member of the Hawaii Senate who, since 1996, has represented the 9th District, which includes Hawaii Kai, Aina Haina, Kahala and Diamond Head.
After Komuro, Kahala worked with a variety of producers at Warner Music Japan, such as American Andy Marvel (Diana King, Jessica Simpson) and recorded songs by Gary Carolla (N Sync) and Vincent Degiorgio (N Sync, Atomic Kitten, Love, Inc., Mink, Nakano Mori Band) which appeared on her albums One Fine Day and Love Again, released in 1999 and 2001, respectively.
