The title of the film was initially Arivudainambi Kaliya Perumal, the name of Rajinikanth's father in the 1980 comedy film Thillu Mullu, before the team opted to change it.

The film was first reported in April 2013 when it was said that Vishnu would collaborate with Bindu Madhavi in a venture to be directed by Suresh of Eththan fame and produced by Srinath Raju under the banner SS Productions.
