The Kamehameha V Cottage, located at the western end of the garden, was originally built in the 1850s by Prince Lot Kapuāiwa, who would later become King Kamehameha V.

Before her, since the lands were won in battle by Kamehameha I they passed from Kameʻeiamoku to Ulumāheihei Hoapili, then to Prince Lot Lot Kapuāiwa (who became King Kamehameha V), and Princess Ruth Keʻelikōlani.
During the seven‑month visit, she received on board King Kamehameha V and Dowager Queen Emma, the American Chargé d'affaires Colonel Spaulding, U.S. Minister Edward M. McCook, and other Island officials and court members in July and August, and then cruised the Hawaiian chain, making charts and patrolling into December.
In December 2005, a capsule buried by Kamehameha V when he laid the cornerstone was located, at the direction of the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command, by Professor Larry Connors of the University of Denver using ground penetrating radar.
