Kanheri was a University center by the time the area was under the rule of the Maurayan and Kushan empires.
Since then, Latur has seen rapid and continued growth in terms of population and area, and many erstwhile villages surrounding the city, such as Khadgaon, Kava, Kanheri, Gangapur, Vaswadi, Harangul, Malwati, Gangapur and Wasangaon, have become suburbs.

Around 1630, the parish counted some 1500 parishioners in the villages of Mount Poinsur, Dhainsa, Simpor, Canaria and Cassor, with a chapel dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel in Canaria.
