# The Karamojong attack the villages in Amuria District to steal cattle and harm anyone who attempts to stop them.
In eastern Uganda, in the Karamoja region, there are nomadic cattle herders called the Karamojong.
Karamojong women and children are sold in cattle markets or by intermediaries and forced into situations of domestic servitude, sexual exploitation, herding, and begging.
They were mainly cattle keepers in the late 1960s but a change was seen when their northern neighbors, the Karamojong, raided most of their cattle, and displaced hundreds of people.
The majority of the population are Karamojong and the language spoken is the Karamojong Language.
Their descendants have largely been assimilated into the more recently arrived Iteso and Karamojong groups.
Reaching a height after the widespread cattle raid by Karamojong in 1987, the UPA rebellion was eventually ended through the mediation of the Teso Commission.

In the 1970s, President Idi Amin Dada created Iteso Home Guard units specifically to protect the region from raids by Karamojong cattle rustlers.
