According to Karel van Mander, who listed him as one of two painters from Northern Europe whom he met in Venice, he was a good poet (rederijker) as well as a painter; van Mander thought he came from Mechelen.

His discussion of oil painting was important for dispelling the myth, propagated by Giorgio Vasari and Karel Van Mander, that oil painting was invented by Jan van Eyck (although Theophilus (Roger of Helmerhausen) clearly gives instructions for oil-based painting in his treatise, On Divers Arts, written in 1125).
George Boba, a painter and engraver of the 16th century, known by the name of MaƮtre Georges, was a native of Rheims, and is said by Karel van Mander to have been a disciple of Frans Floris, and by others of Titian.
His father arrived in Bocholt, Germany, near the border of the Netherlands, in 1457, and though his place of birth is uncertain, Joachim von Sandrart referred to him as Israel von Mecheln, and Karel van Mander referred to him as Israel van Mentz.
