Situated two kilometres inside the International Border across the River Surma, Atgram served as a major road communication centre at the eastern edge of Sylhet Division of East Pakistan, connecting it with Zakiganj to the south opposite the Indian Border town of Karimganj.
Two years later she was offered a post in charge of the Girl's School at Karimganj.

Returning to Britain after the end of World War One, arriving towards the end of 1920 and staying for about a year, she raised funds in London and Wales for a building programme to provide residential hostels for Indian teachers, accommodation for school children in the Karimanj District, and to establish a 'School of Weaving' for the Girl's School at Karimganj.
He sanctioned stipends and scholarships to many schools of Karimganj, Assam and Chittagong.
Kanchan was born in Ashutipara, Karimganj, in the district of Kishoreganj.
