The city of Kashiwazaki and the villages of Iizuna and Kariwa registered the highest seismic intensity of a strong 6 on Japan's shindo scale, and the quake was felt as far away as Tokyo.
With this merger, Kariwa District has only the village of Kariwa left.

Prior to the split, Mishima District covers the cities of Kashiwazaki (excluding the western part of the city), village of Kariwa, Nagaoka (parts of the former towns of Oguni and Koshiji).
