Kirkhoven (the anglicised form of van der Kerckhove) was the only son of Jehan, Lord of Heenvliet and his wife, Katherine (later created Countess of Chesterfield), both courtiers in the Princess of Orange's household.

His estate passed to his eldest daughter the Honourable Katherine, who firstly married Henry Stanhope, Lord Stanhope.
Katherine, Lady Stanhope, widow of Henry Stanhope, Lord Stanhope, eldest son of the first Earl of Chesterfield and father of the second Earl, was created Countess of Chesterfield for life in 1660 .
On 4 December 1628, he married Katherine Wotton, daughter of Thomas Wotton, 2nd Baron Wotton in Boughton Malherbe in Kent.
