He was signed for Hull City A.F.C. early in the 1964–65 season by manager Cliff Britton and became the link between City's defence and the attacking force of the mid to late sixties – Ken Wagstaff, Chris Chilton and Butler.
In November 2002, Wagstaff celebrated his 60th birthday at the Ramada Jarvis Hotel in Willerby with 350 friends, including players from the Hull City 1965–66 Third Division championship team.
Overall, in all competitions, Wilkinson scored 91 goals for Mansfield, which places him third on the club's all-time scoring list behind Harry Johnson and Ken Wagstaff.
