In its early days in the late 1960s it was called Iwasawa's analogue of the Jacobian.
He attended elementary school there, but later moved to Tokyo to attend Musashi High School.

While there John H. Coates provided him with a problem for his doctoral thesis, which he later completed at Princeton University under the advising of Kenkichi Iwasawa.
